OPP lay drunk-driving charges on man asleep in OPP parking lot

Officers from the Orillia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged an individual with impaired driving, after an 18-year-old male was found asleep behind the wheel of a parked car at the force’s local headquarters.

An OPP press release states that at about 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 10, officers were dispatched to OPP Central Region Headquarters after reports of an unconscious male in the parking lot there. Upon arriving on scene, they observed a male to be sleeping behind the wheel with several open alcohol containers throughout the vehicle.

The driver was subsequently arrested for impaired driving and transported to the detachment. Patrick McGinely of Etobicoke, Ont., has also been charged with other offences including adult forgery and having unsealed alcohol containers in a vehicle.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia in September. In addition, his driver’s license has been suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle has been impounded for seven days.

Coincidentally, the OPP’s Central Region says it has seen an increase in the number of impaired drivers on roads in the region, with 1,496 impairment-related charges laid this year as of Aug. 6.
